Bib - 008 Invalid Character

What is this?

Each fixed field in the 008 field is defined with particular values, mostly letters, numbers, spaces, and a few punctuation marks. Some records may have other characters.

When is this trouble?

When records have undefined characters in fixed fields, they may display strangely in the catalog.

When records have fixed fields that don't specify their values correctly, those records may not show up in searches limited by those fixed fields.

Exceptions

Some libraries' past practices may have included encoding particular fixed fields with (now) non-standard characters, such as N/A for Lang.
