LC Call Numbers - Comma Upper

What is this?

Most LC call numbers have at least one cutter consisting of a dot, followed by an uppercase letter, followed by one or more numbers. If a call number has a comma followed by an uppercase letter, it may be a malformed cutter.

Why is this trouble?

A call number with this pattern may be an indicator that the call number is not correctly formed, and may or may not match the spine label.

Processes that parse the call number (to normalize for sorting, to group with other call numbers, to print spine labels, etc.) may not function correctly.

Exceptions

There may be good call numbers matching this pattern, such as those including enumeration with multiple numbers using Roman numerals:

  • M3 .S380 1967 ser.VI,VIII,XIV

How to Find

If you are in Alma, there is an analysis to search for this issue in the "Looking for Trouble" folder. Go to the "LC Call Numbers" folder and look for the "Comma Upper" analysis.

If you can search or filter your call numbers by regular expression, look for call numbers that do not match the expression /,[A-Z]/.
