LC Call Numbers - Too Long

What is this?

Library of Congress call numbers are made up of several components, and while some components such as cutters don't have a maximum length, common practice is to not have them get too long.

Where is the trouble?

A long call number may include extra unnecessary information that is not part of the call number.

A holdings record may have been constructed incorrectly, resulting in additional subfields such as notes being added to the call number.

A long call number may be a call number from some other scheme incorrectly marked as an LC call number.
