LC Call Numbers - Too Short
What is this?
Library of Congress call numbers are made up of several components; if a call number is too short, some of those components may be missing or there may be other issues:
K1094
TR
S74-1
Why is this trouble?
A short call number in the catalog may have its holdings record constructed incorrectly, for example having two subfield b.
A short call number may not have been completely assigned. For example, the cataloger may have only assigned the class, such as "TR".
A short call number may be a call number from some other scheme (such as a local accession number) incorrectly marked as an LC call number.
How to Find
If you are in Alma, there is an analysis to search for this issue in the "Looking for Trouble" folder. Go to the "LC Call Numbers" folder and look for the "Too Short" analysis. This analysis finds call numbers less than 6 characters long.
