LC Call Numbers - Upper End

What is this?

One pattern that can show up in LC call numbers in catalogs is an uppercase letter at the end of the call number, like this:

  • BF181 .S22S
  • Q171 .O
  • PQ8219.M5 G
  • QC320 .F16 1948F
  • N5310 .A161pE

Why is this trouble?

A call number with this pattern might include a number that was accidentally read as a letter.

A call number with this pattern may be an incomplete cutter:

  • Q171 .O
  • PQ8219.M5 G

A call number with this number may be from an older standard and now just contains extraneous characters:

  • N5310 .A161pE (title starts with p, translation into English)

Exceptions

There are correctly formed call numbers with this pattern, such as those containing enumeration by letters or roman numerals:

  • Z6031 .B5 pt. B
  • QE500 .D48 no.14A
  • QP517.B5 I550 XI, XII, XVI

How to Find

If you are in Alma, there is an analysis to search for this issue in the "Looking for Trouble" folder. Go to the "LC Call Numbers" folder and look for the "Upper End" analysis.

If you can search or filter your call numbers by regular expression, use the expression /[A-Z]$/.
