Holdings - 852 subfield d

What is this?

In a holdings record, 852 subfield $d is for "former shelving location"; that is, "Call numbers/shelf numbers where a resource was previously located, in cases of a relocation or a reordering/reorganization of a collection as a whole".

When is this trouble?

If your library does typically not use $d in holdings records, it may be in there accidentally:

  • 852 01 ‡b storage ‡c rs ‡h QA75.5 ‡i .S958 ‡x paid by LLE ‡d 19970425 (used to record a date)
  • 852 00 ‡b young ‡c yl3 ‡h DS119.8.J67 ‡d L85 1999 (instead of ‡i)
  • 852 0_ ‡b finearts ‡c fa ‡h M1507 ‡i .Z37 2000 ‡d (call number should end 2000d)
  • 852 0_ ‡b young ‡c ylsd ‡h HE 20.7102:L 97/3/996 ‡d o not discard (should be a ‡x note)

If you are using $d for its intended purpose, $d subfields that do not indicate a former location will create confusion in reports.

If the $d was used to record the date in a note, that date will not be part of the notes if those fields are specifically queried.

If the $d was a "d" in the call number, that part of the call number will not be visible in the catalog

If part of the call number is stored in a $d instead of a $i, that part of the call number may not show up in online catalog display, and may not have even made it to the spine label of the book.
