Holdings - Call Number Type

What is this?

Holdings records specify the call number type or shelving scheme in the first indicator of the 852 field, like this:

852 0_ $h PQ6627.R8 $i Z850 1983

with codes like these defined:

  • 0 - Library of Congress classification
  • 1 - Dewey Decimical classification
  • 8 - Other scheme

When is this trouble?

If a holdings record is marked as the wrong type of call number, that resource may not appear in a generated browse or shelf list, or may appear in the wrong place (like at the beginning or end).

How to Find

If you are in Alma, there is an analysis to search for this issue in the "Looking for Trouble" folder. Go to the "Holdings" folder and look for the "Call Number Type" analysis. By default it is set to search for holdings that are not marked as Library of Congress classification, but you may wish to limit the search to particular locations or check for holdings (not) marked with a different call number type.
