LC Call Numbers - Pipe

What is this?

Most LC call numbers should not have pipe characters, but some call numbers in the catalog may have them.

Why is this trouble?

A call number with a pipe may be an indicator that it was copied and pasted in from an interface that uses pipes as subfield delimiters:

  • PQ6613.I379 | H4

A call number with a pipe may be a capital letter I or number one that was recorded as a pipe character:

  • JA71 .S793 |982
  • A|3 .H37

How to Find

If you are in Alma, there is an analysis to search for this issue in the "Looking for Trouble" folder. Go to the "LC Call Numbers" folder and look for the "Pipe" analysis.
