Holdings - 852 Subfield Invalid

What is this?

In a holdings record, 852 only has some subfields defined in the MARC standard.

When is this trouble?

If a holdings record has subfields with codes other than those defined in the MARC standard, it may cause problems with indexing, display, or reporting. For example:

  • 852 0_ ‡b law ‡c lawdocs ‡h Y 4.W 36:WMCP 96-72 ‡L 00813
  • 852 0_ ‡b storage ‡c rs ‡h KF9640 i ‡C 64 1843
  • 852 0_ ‡b young ‡c yl4 ‡h ‡h PR2002 ‡ i .K5 1939

If part of the call number is in an invalid subfield, it may not appear in the catalog or on the book label.

Mis-coded subfields may display strangely or not be indexed in their intended fields.
